This is the minute-by-minute account of people who lived through the disaster, from the event to rescue, reunion and repatriation. The Belgian people are also remembered for the care they gave to the bewildered survivors. Including plans, photographs and records considering how this disaster impacted ferry operating procedures forever, Iain Yardley’s thoughtful book covers every aspect of this tragedy. Many survivors, relatives and rescue workers have contributed to make this a fitting tribute to all involved from that night to the present day.

"Ninety Seconds at Zeebrugge" is a very overdue account of the capsizing of the ferry "Herald of Free Enterprise" in Zeebrugge harbor and the struggles and heroism that followed. While I won't recap the entire story, the "Herald of Free Enterprise" was a ferry that sank quickly after departing Zeebrugge on March 6, 1987, ultimately killing 193 people. The proximal cause of the sinking was Assistant Bosun Mark Stanley falling asleep in his cabin prior to departure and forgetting to close the huge doors on the front of the ferry, allowing tons of seawater to pour in as the ferry accelerated. The free liquid surface effect made the ferry rapidly unstable and the ship quickly capsized, coming to rest on its side partially submerged.Mercifully, close by was NATO Operation WINTEX, with dozens of ships, helicopters, and divers, all of which responded with amazing speed and gallantry, greatly increasing the number of lives saved. The Belgian emergency actions were amazingly well-planned and executed, and much was learned about planning for mass casualty events from the "Herald" sinking and aftermath.The book is very detailed and accounts for nearly all passengers and crew by name, and is quite thorough in its explanations of what happened, why, aggravating factors (e.g. there were no indicator lights on the bridge showing the Captain the position of the bow doors), the actual sinking, the rescues, the aftermath, and the inquiry and legal proceedings. The first part of the book is somewhat like the classic "A Night to Remember", but the second half in particular gets rather technical, and the nuances of British maritime law are occasionally tedious.I think overall Iain Yardley turned out a masterpiece on this overlooked tragedy. It's exceptionally well-illustrated and clearly written with sympathy for the suffering of the victims, survivors, and families. I was engaged by every page and highly recommend it.
